Net zoals verkeerslichten de doorstroming van voertuigen op kruispunten regelen, regelen AC-contactors de stroom van elektriciteit in circuits. Wanneer een groen licht (onder spanning staande AC-contactor) verkeer doorlaat, is het alsof het elektrische circuit open is, waardoor elektriciteit kan stromen.
